Skeed
by Decon Mobility
Skeed by Eppur is a pair of wheels for manual wheelchairs featuring a unique braking system. Conventionally, braking is done using the handrims, which requires the user to rub their hands against the rim. With Skeed, however, a lever firmly attached to the hub activates a braking mechanism inside the wheel hub. This allows the wheelchair to slow down and stop without having to hold onto the handrim.
One hand on the grip ring and one finger on the brake lever are all it takes to slow down or stop—and, according to the manufacturer, this requires only one-fifth of the force that would otherwise be needed. A cam system ensures progressive braking. By moving the lever slightly backward, the speed can be finely controlled. Even when turning or going downhill, the wheelchair brakes gently and smoothly, reducing the risk of injury from friction on the hands.
Weighing just 2.15 kg per wheel in the standard version—including the aluminum grip ring—the Skeed wheels are also lightweight. This reduces the wheelchair’s total weight and makes transfers and transport easier.
