Lifting at home

Overcoming stairs and floors without barriers for families with a child with a disability

For families with a child who has a physical disability, daily life is often a challenge - especially when it comes to negotiating stairs or reaching different floors in the house or apartment. Elevators and lifts offer a solution to this problem, making it possible to overcome stairs both outside and inside the house safely and without barriers.

Lifts in front of the entrance: barrier-free access to the house

A lift at the entrance to the house is particularly useful if the building has an external staircase that makes access difficult. This can be the case, for example, in houses with a row of steps or on slopes. Such a lift ensures that people with reduced mobility, including children with disabilities, can reach the entrance to the house independently or with minimal assistance.
Platform lifts, which provide a stable and safe ride, are particularly suitable for this purpose. These lifts are often a preferred choice as they offer a flat platform that can accommodate wheelchairs or baby carriages. Platform lifts are also weather-resistant and can be adapted to local conditions in different ways - for example for small outdoor stairs or larger height differences. In some cases, a stand-up lift that moves vertically can also be useful and offers a practical solution, especially for less complex inclines.

Lifts in the house or apartment: barrier-free access to floors

Lifts provide important support for barrier-free access to different floors, not only in front of the house, but also inside the house or apartment. Especially in multi-storey houses or apartments without an elevator, stairs can be a serious obstacle. This is where stair lifts or platform lifts come into play.
Stairlifts are an excellent solution for safely negotiating stairs. They are mounted directly on the wall or railing of the stairs and enable horizontal travel along the steps. These lifts are particularly suitable when space is limited, as they generally take up little room. For families with a child who is dependent on a wheelchair, they offer a flexible way of providing access to different floors of the house.
In larger houses or apartments that offer more space, platform lifts can be a practical solution. These lifts not only transport individuals, but also wheelchairs or baby carriages safely from one floor to the next. Although they require slightly more space than a stairlift, they offer a more convenient solution when space requirements for wheelchairs or other aids need to be taken into account. These lifts can be installed on straight or curved staircases and enable barrier-free mobility even in buildings with narrow corridors.

Solutions from the community:

ALPIN platform lift

We have a platform lift from Lehner, which was purchased from our medical supply store. The lift runs over our balcony at the front door and lifts up one floor.

LiftonTRIO

We were looking for a solution for the narrow staircase between the children's room, bathroom and living area. After some conversion work, which we carried out ourselves, the installation went smoothly. Part of the cost was covered by our health insurance, the rest was a worthwhile investment.

SCOIATTOLO 2000

We currently still have this with the Special Tomato seat on it. We are waiting for the one with a customized seat shell, which is currently being manufactured. We had also tested the Scralamobil, but this one is much easier. We have a spiral staircase and live on the 3rd floor.

scalamobil

We have a staircase with 6 steps up to the apartment. The wheelchair runs on rails and is attached to the grab rails with two brackets. Then it goes up or down electrically, step by step. The battery lasts for almost a week with daily use.

Jolly stair climber

We use the Jolly caterpillar stairlift in our hallway.

Artira platform lift

We have a platform lift from Garaventa. The staircase has a curve. It is measured with a laser and the lift is built accordingly. We push our daughter in the Madita size 2 onto the platform. We've had the lift for 2 years now and so far it's working great.
