Steering systems

There are various steering systems available for manual and power wheelchairs, which can be selected based on the user’s individual needs and abilities. Here are some of the most common steering systems:

Standard steering: This is the basic steering system used on most manual wheelchairs. The user steers the wheels directly with their hands.
Joystick control: This steering system is used on most electric wheelchairs. A joystick mounted either on the armrest or in other positions on the wheelchair allows the user to control the wheelchair by moving the joystick forward, backward, and sideways.
Head control: With this control method, the user uses head movements to steer the wheelchair. Sensors on a special headband or mount detect head movements and translate them into steering movements.
Foot control: For users with limited hand function, the wheelchair can be controlled via foot movements. Pedals or special foot controls allow the wheelchair to be steered by pressing or tilting with the feet.
Suck and blow control: This steering system is often used by users with very limited muscle function. The wheelchair can be controlled by sucking or blowing into a tube or sensor.
Voice control: Advanced electric wheelchairs can be equipped with voice control systems, in which the user gives voice commands to control the wheelchair.
