What is trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)?
Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome, is a genetic disorder caused by an additional chromosome 21. Affected children show typical characteristics such as a round face, almond-shaped eyes, a flat nasal bridge and low muscle tone. Developmental delays in speech, motor skills and cognition are common, as are heart defects and vision and hearing problems.
Aids that are frequently used for trisomy 21:
Aids and support for everyday life
Tailor-made aids play an important role in overcoming motor and communicative hurdles in everyday life:
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): as children with trisomy 21 often have a "speech barrier", sign language (e.g. GuK - sign-supported communication), picture boards or simple electronic talkers help them to communicate before spoken language is fully developed.
- Mobility & orthopaedics: Due to loose ligaments and joints (hyperlaxity), stable orthopaedic insoles or ankle-wrapping shoes are often important. In the case of severe hypotonia, walking aids or specialized tricycles support the joy of movement.
- Hearing and vision aids: Children's glasses fitted early on and modern hearing aids are crucial to ensure that the child does not miss any important stimuli from their environment.
- Positioning & ergonomics: When eating and learning, therapy chairs that grow with the child or footrests on normal chairs help to promote an upright posture and make it easier to concentrate.
- Oral motor skills trainer: Special chewing aids or drinking cups support the strengthening of the mouth muscles, which benefits both eating and clear pronunciation.
