Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by a persistent predisposition to develop epileptic seizures. According to the ILAE definition, epilepsy is present when
- at least two unprovoked (or reflex) seizures have occurred more than 24 hours apart, or
- one unprovoked seizure has occurred and the probability of further seizures over the next ten years is at least 60%, or
- an epileptic syndrome has been diagnosed.
Epileptic seizures are caused by temporary, abnormal, and synchronized electrical activity in groups of nerve cells in the brain. Depending on the type of seizure, they may be accompanied by motor, sensory, autonomic, or psychological symptoms, as well as alterations in consciousness (loss of consciousness).
Worldwide, the prevalence is approximately 0.8–1.2% of the population; about 50 million people are affected. The annual incidence is approximately 50 new cases per 100,000 people. Epilepsy can occur at any age.
The goal of treatment is to achieve freedom from seizures without significant side effects. If complete freedom from seizures cannot be achieved, the goal is to achieve the greatest possible reduction in seizures. This should reduce seizure-related risks, such as injuries, status epilepticus, hospitalization, psychosocial limitations, and the risk of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy), and improve quality of life.
Despite modern pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options, approximately 30% of patients remain drug-resistant. People with epilepsy, especially those with frequent generalized tonic-clonic seizures, are at increased risk for SUDEP.
Technical systems for detecting epileptic seizures, such as NightWatch, can make an important contribution in this regard. They automatically detect clinically significant nocturnal seizures and enable early intervention by the patient’s caregiver. This increases safety during sleep and can help minimize the risk.

Recognizing Seizures During Sleep
NightWatch reliably alerts users and caregivers to potential epileptic seizures during sleep. This innovative, certified medical device was developed by a Dutch consortium (neurologists, patient organizations, universities, and the high-tech industry) and is recommended by doctors, healthcare professionals, and patients.
NightWatch consists of a comfortable wireless sensor, which is usually worn on the upper arm, and a receiver, the base station. The sensor accurately measures the user’s heart rate and movements during sleep, enabling the timely detection of epileptic seizures that occur while sleeping. If NightWatch detects a potentially dangerous epileptic seizure, it sends an alert (audible and visual signals) via a wireless connection from the sensor to the base station.

NightWatch Portal
NightWatch can be connected to the Internet. This allows the user to view their measurement data in an online portal. This enables detailed tracking of nighttime events and a better understanding of the reasons behind NightWatch notifications. This helps eliminate any uncertainty about what happened during the night. You can also note the days for which measurement data is available.
